Mookai Rosie is proud to announce the launch of its Indigenous birth support program, featuring the introduction of Indigenous doulas.
As non-medical companions, Doulas or Birth Attendants, offer invaluable physical and emotional assistance throughout the stages of pregnancy, labor, and the immediate postpartum period. In the community, they are commonly known as Chalali Doulas!
This initiative marks a groundbreaking development in Cairns, as our doulas will provide advocacy and facilitate communication for women giving birth at the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service. By doing so, we aim to bolster support networks for primary health care and address complex care needs, fostering closer collaboration with both community and government health providers.
Moreover, these doula positions align with our vision for establishing a dedicated birthing center. This center will offer an alternative approach to midwifery services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, characterized by culturally safe practices. Our services will include comprehensive postnatal checks spanning 7-10 days, ongoing postnatal and breastfeeding support, as well as transportation assistance, all within a culturally respectful environment.
