Learn more During the turbulent 1970's, Rose Richards known as 'Aunty Rosie', an Aboriginal Welfare Officer with Cairns Base Hospital, watched as high numbers of sick Aboriginal children came to Cairns for treatment. After long and often repeated hospital stays, many children were discharged and sent back to their communities, where access to follow-up care was either limited or entirely unavailable. As a result, these children often became sick again and had to return to Cairns, creating a cycle of illness and hospitalisation. At the same time, pregnant women from Cape York and the Torres Strait were required to travel to Cairns at 34 weeks gestation, remaining in hospital until giving birth—a stay that could last up to six weeks. Cairns Base Hospital was not always a culturally safe or welcoming environment for Aboriginal women. Recognising this, Aunty Rosie began taking these women and children into her own home. The results spoke for themselves—under her care, both mothers and children began to thrive. This experience led Aunty Rosie to a firm belief: there was an urgent need for safe, culturally appropriate accommodation—designed by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. During the 1970s, Aboriginal communities across the country were calling for self-determination after decades of oppression and government control. In urban centres like Redfern, Fitzroy, and South Brisbane, Aboriginal community-controlled health and legal services were established in response to... --- header Our Mission Is to Provide a Professional and Caring Place Health CareAenean lacinia bibendum nulla sed consectetur. It highlights Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led solutions and calls on governments to support and invest in the strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to lead on child wellbeing, development and safety responses for our children. Mookai’s Indigenous doulas Brooke and Jana travelled to Aurukun to strengthen our connection with the community, and the Aurukun families we serve. Aurukun is one of the three main communities Mookai supports clients from, along with Kowanyama and Pormpuraaw. Did you know in the past year Mookai supported over 220 Aurukun clients (majority female) across our services? ! Brooke and Jana caught up with numerous clients, checking in on the progress of mums and bubs and where possible, discussing postnatal and early childhood needs. They particularly enjoyed joining the women by the river in the late afternoons to fish, learning and sharing everyday community life. They also met with community stakeholders to yarn about community needs and share information about Mookai’s expanding maternal and primary care services. This included meeting with Aurukun Primary Health Care Centre, Aurukun Shire Council, Kooklan Early Childhood Centre, and the Family Support Hub. More formal consultation processes with the community are also in the works! Brooke and Jana were thrilled with the interest received in our expanding maternal health program! Aunty Irene first remembers coming to Mookai when the accommodation was situated at Balaclava Rd in Earlville, now Mookai Family Health. She speaks fondly of spending time with founders Aunty Rosie, Aunty June, Aunty Min and her husband Uncle Ken. She recalls helping the pregnant women up and down the stairs, and reminding them to take their water bottles when walking down the road to the shops (now Stocklands Earlville). Whilst Aunty can’t remember the first time she came to Mookai or how many times she’s been, she knows she’s been coming for over 20 years now, often acting as an escort. What’s an escort one might ask? In Kowanyama, as with many other Cape and Torres communities, residents have limited access to health care. Kowanyama has a small health centre supported by Queensland Health and Apunipima, with visiting doctors via the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). However, anything serious requires travel, and often an extensive stay in Cairns. Patients coming from Cape and Torres communities to Cairns for medical treatment under the Patient Travel Scheme (PTS) can commonly apply for an escort (partner, family member, friend) to travel with them. However, who will act as the escort can be a harder decision than it seems. Often one’s partner needs to stay home with other children or for work. If staying at Mookai Accommodation, the escort needs to be a female as it is a women and child... --- NAIDOC Week is an annual celebration and period of recognition for the achievements, culture, and history of Australia’s First Nations people. In great news, BCG Clinics for Torres and Cape children will be held at Mookai Family Health the first Friday of every month! Clinics are being facilitated in partnership by Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service and Mookai Rosie Bi-Bayan, led by Amanda Bywaters (BN, GDIP, MPH), Clinical Nurse Consultant, Tuberculosis Control Unit. The BCG (bacille Calmette-Guérin) vaccine is used for prevention of tuberculosis (TB). The vaccine contains a weakened form of the bacteria (germ) that cause TB. Because it is weakened, it doesn't cause TB in healthy people but it helps develop some protection (immunity) against TB. BCG works best in babies and young children and is particularly effective at preventing severe forms of TB including TB meningitis with greater than 70% protection. In Queensland, BCG vaccination is recommended for the following groups: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander newborn babiesChildren aged less than 5 years who will live in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities for a period of 3 months or more Children aged less than 5 years who will be travelling to TB high risk countries for a period of 3 months or more As the BCG vaccine is rarely available in community clinics up North, availability of these clinics are invaluable for Torres and Cape children in the Cairns region.   For appointments, please call the Mookai Family Health team on 4081 7554. Made possible through an Australian government initiative aimed at reducing hearing loss by facilitating more frequent ear screenings. This initiative not only provides us with advanced equipment but also offers training opportunities for our clinicians, enhancing their technical expertise in conducting hearing screenings. When was the last time you and your children had your hearing checked? Did you know that Aboriginal children have the highest rates of otitis media in the world, a middle ear infection that can lead to hearing loss, also known as 'glue ear'? Upon implementation, Mookai Rosie will be equipped to offer comprehensive hearing screening services to both children and adults visiting our clinic. By doing so, we aim to bolster support networks for primary health care and address complex care needs, fostering closer collaboration with both community and government health providers. Moreover, these doula positions align with our vision for establishing a dedicated birthing center. Wally joined the Mookai team as a casual in 2015, and has been with us ever since. Over the past 9 years, he has supported a range of activities including quality and compliance, transport and maintenance, to being part of the Senior Management Team. Wally shares some of his fond memories of working at Mookai. Favourite occasion We celebrated NAIDOC Week on-site for the first time ever in 2019 and I cooked my special bully beef. Staff, visitors and clients were all quite impressed with my culinary skills! I felt honored when Aunty Irene Major, a Mookai Community Ambassador from Kowanyama, commented that it was ‘the best bully beef she’d ever tasted’. To this day, every time Aunty Irene is back at Mookai, she asks when I will be cooking bully beef again.   Funniest memory I refer to this as the ‘kidnapping incident’... Not long after taking over management of the Transport and Accommodation Support Teams, I had a driver unable to come to work, but only notified on the morning of the shift. I quickly jumped in to cover the bus route. I drove to Cairns Base Hospital, and pulled up to the Transit Lounge, under D Block. The other driver mentioned that he had dropped off an Aunty from Kowanyama that morning, and as I pulled in an older Aboriginal lady came out of the Transit Lounge. She looked as though she had... --- ---
